Concrete is a hand drawn animation exploring the ideas of thought, change and nature through material and documentary drawing methods. The piece was created earlier this year after a long period of research into the material concrete and its use in the progressive modern world. Many of the drawing methods used for each frame questioned control of the hand, of the person making it, through use of automatic and blind drawing - where the eyes are closed, and the pencil mark is governed by touching the object. This concept was played with in the animating process; each frame would be traced intentionally different from the last, resulting in moments of rough continuity and flashes of texture. The words spoken over the top are a conscious description of the images on the screen, a flow of thought. They play with describing the piece in concrete, aesthetic principles of form to abstract notes on action.
