‘The Beauty Ritual’
‘The Beauty Ritual’ is a series of images looking to explore beauty regimes adopted by the majority of young women.
Inspired by the excessive and absurd nature of the beauty industry; these images play upon familiar stereotypical female orientated advertising, whilst also reflecting on the nostalgia of growing up as a young female. With the head of a doll made up to look like the artist herself; blonde hair against the hot pink backdrop illustrates a Barbie doll-like scene.
Neither condemning or promoting these rituals, the work is an exploration of something often done without second thought, yet a habit that can quickly become costly and obsessive. Now more than ever, we see young people morph into absurdity as they seek to express themselves in the form of their own appearances.
Throughout its creation this work became a personal exploration of the artist’s personal beauty regime and brought to light questions of self-love versus self-expression. Asking herself, when are these rituals are performed out of genuine enjoyment, and when are they performed due to a feeling of obligation.
